HC Deb 25 February 1993 vol 219 cc704-5W
Mr. David Nicholson

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what estimate she has of the number of self-employed people who are currently without gainful employment; what changes have taken place in these estimates over the past three years; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. McLoughlin

The most recent estimate of the number of people unemployed on the internationally agreed ILO definition who were previously self-employed is from the summer—June to August—labour force survey. This, together with estimates over the previous three years, is shown in the following table;

Great Britain (not seasonally adjusted)
number
Spring 1990 111,000
Spring 1991 188,000
Spring 1992 279,000
Summer 1992 275,000
