To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what was the value of the basic state pension as a proportion of gross average earnings in the United Kingdom for each year since 1978.

There are no comparable statistics available on average earnings for the United Kingdom and the other member states of the European Community. Therefore, it is not possible to provide the information requested.
