To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will publish a table to show expenditure on(a) mental illness, (b) mental handicap or learning disability and (c) social services as a proportion of gross domestic product for each year since 1979.

1 Gross domestic product (GDP) figures for England relate to calendar years; all other expenditure figures relate to financial years. Percentage figures are therefore approximate.
2 Figures for spending on services for mentally ill and people with learning disability combine relevant (current) expenditure in the Hospital and Community Health Services and Personal Social Services. Figures do not include spending by Family Health Services. From 1988–89 onwards spending on Community Mental Health Nurses and Community Psychiatric Nurses is identifiable and included in the figures.
3 Changes in data definition and collection may mean that figures are not directly comparable.
