HC Deb 08 February 1993 vol 218 cc478-81W
Mr. Tyler

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many courses of dental treatment for children were undertaken in each family health services authority area in each of the years 1989–90, 1990–91 and 1991–92, with the percentage change for 1991–92 over 1989–90 for each authority.

Dr. Mawhinney

[holding answer 1 February 1993]: The information requested is given in the table. Following the introduction of the new dental contract on 1 October 1990, most payments to dentists for treating children are by way of capitation fees. Under capitation, it is not possible separately to identify courses of treatment. Thus the number of child courses of treatment in 1989–90 and 1991–92 cannot be directly compared, and such comparisons are seriously misleading. In 1989–90, dentists in England were paid £163.9 million for treating children. In 1991–92, this had risen to £244.0 million.
