HC Deb 03 February 1993 vol 218 c209W
Mr. Steinberg

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what estimate he has of the average weekly non-contact time of teachers in(a) secondary schools and (b) primary schools in (i) 1985 and (ii) 1990.

Mr. Forth

The available information on teachers' non-contact time is derived from staffing surveys conducted in secondary schools in 1988 and 1992, and primary schools in 1987. The tables show the actual amount of teachers' non-contact time during pupil timetabled lesson time in the survey week. They are averages for all teachers in the sector, including head teachers.

Teachers' average non-contact time (hours)
Maintained Nursery and Primary schools
1987 2.0
Maintained Secondary schools
1988 4.2
1992 4.7
