HC Deb 03 February 1993 vol 218 c209W
Mr. Dafis

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what plans he has for complying with the commitment in "Agenda 21" of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development to update or prepare strategies for integrating the issues of environment and development into education to undertake a review of curricula to ensure a multi-disciplinary approach.

Mr. Forth

In schools the national curriculum gives ample scope for pupils to develop a knowledge and understanding of the environment and how it affects our lives. Several of the national curriculum subjects include studies relevant to education about, for and through the environment.

In further and higher education, an expert committee was appointed by the Department and the Welsh Office in 1991 to advise on the future development of environmental education: its report was published on 2 February 1993. Its recommendations are being brought to the attention of those to whom they are addressed.
