HC Deb 03 February 1993 vol 218 cc209-10W
Mr. Patrick Thompson

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what figures are available comparing Government assumptions about the levels of local authority expenditure on schools with the actual expenditure in the current year and planned expenditure for next year.

Mr. Forth

Education's share of the overall level of spending by local authorities which the Government assumed for the 1992–93 local authority grant settlement is £18,787 million. The equivalent figure for 1993–94 is £16,854 million; this represents an increase of 2.6 per cent. after taking account of the transfer of responsibilities, notably for further education. The Government do not make assumptions about the amount local authorities will spend on schools. Information about authorities' actual expenditure in 1992–93 and planned expenditure next year is not yet available.
