Wales, indicating the number of places in each and the proposed locations of the planned 65 new secure places announced in 1991 together with tables showing the number of (a) old and (b) new places falling into each (i) county and (ii) region in England and Wales.

Mr. Bowis

There is a national network of 295 approved local authority secure places in England, to which all local authorities have access. Details of these, and the secure places in the two youth treatment centres, are shown in table A.

Because of a rise in the number of 15 to 16-year-old boys remanded to prison since 1991, a capital programme to increase the national stock of secure accommodation in England by a further 100 places is now planned. Details of proposals to provide these additional places currently brought forward by local authorities are shown in table B. Final confirmation of proposals is dependent, in some cases, on local authority agreement and on obtaining necessary planning consents.

Information about the provision of secure accommodation in Wales is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
