Mr. Milburn

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to her answer of 13 December,Official Report, column 478, how the figure retained by general practitioner fundholders was calculated.

Dr. Mawhinney

Latest information available indicates that the total of general practitioner fundholder underspending in 1992–93 was £31.9 million, though some unaudited information is included in this. GP fundholders have already voluntarily returned £2.4 million of this and further voluntary returns are expected to result in about £28 million efficiency savings to be retained by GP fundholders.
