HL Deb 17 December 1993 vol 550 cc150-1WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Who is responsible for policing the supply, storage and use of human organs for transplantation (a) internationally, and (b) domestically.

Baroness Cumberlege

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is seeking to achieve legislation against trafficking in human organs worldwide. It is for each individual country to enact its own legislation and set up its own policing machinery. In the United Kingdom the relevant legislation is the Human Organ Transplants Act, 1989, and responsibility for policing the supply, transport and use of human organs for transplantation rests with the United Kingdom Transplant Support Service Authority (UKTSSA).
