To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what powers he has to aid improvements, improving safety, of islands and mainland harbours.

[holding answer 15 December 19931: My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State has power to provide financial assistance to harbour authorities, including Caledonian MacBrayne, for the improvement of transport piers and harbours in the highlands and islands. He also has power to assist fishery harbour works throughout Scotland. The relevant legislation is as follows. Harbour authorities are responsible for safety. Congested Districts (Scotland) Act 1897. Highlands and Islands Shipping Services Act 1960. The Fisheries Act 1955.
