To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many fires occurred in private dwellings in(a) Strathclyde and (b) the rest of Scotland in each of the past 10 years; how many fatalities where such fires took place occurred among (i) children aged under 14 years and (ii) other persons; and if he will make a statement.

[holding answer 1 December 1993]: Based on reports from local authority fire brigades on fires attended, the numbers of fires and of fatal casualties in dwellings in Strathclyde, in other parts of Scotland and in Scotland as a whole in each of the years 1983-1992 are as set out in the table. An analysis of fatal casualties by age groups is being prepared and I will write to the hon. Member when this information is available.
