§ Dr. GodmanTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many registered homes have lost their registration in each of the past four years; how many of these were(a) private care homes, (b) private nursing homes, (c) charitable homes or nursing homes and (d) other; and under which provisions of the legislation the deregister took place.
§ Mr. Stewart[holding answer 1 December 1993]: Outturn details for adult residential care homes, including cancellation, are available only for the two financial years ending 31 March 1993. The table also gives details for the period 1 April to 29 November of the current year. Regional and islands council social work authorities have powers to refuse or cancel registration under section 62 of the Social Work (Scotland) Act 1968, as amended by the Registered Establishments (Scotland) Act 1987. Cancellation has occurred in only one case, and the others represent homes that have closed or reclassified as no longer requiring registration.
The Government continue to seek reductions in fatalities by means of publicity and education initiatives and, as part of those campaigns, continue to promote the installation and maintenance of smoke alarms.
