HC Deb 04 November 1992 vol 213 c284W
Mr. Hood

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) how many mentally ill patients are in secure institutions referred there by the courts; and how many were released in each of the past five years back into the community;

(2) how many female mentally ill patients are in secure institutions referred there by the courts; and how many were released in each of the past five years back into the community.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

[holding answer 2 November 1992]: There are currently 115 patients—eight of them female—in the state hospital at Carstairs who have been referred by the criminal courts and a further 30 patients, all male, who have been transferred from Scottish prisons for treatment.

At any given time, there will also be individuals in prison suffering from various forms of mental disorder but not requiring treatment in hospital. Numbers are not recorded centrally.

Most detained patients moving from state hospital are transferred first to local mental illness hospitals for further rehabilitation and, if appropriate, discharge. However, the numbers discharged direct to the community with appropriate support and supervision were as follows:

male female
1987 3 1
1988 3 1
1989 5 1
1990 4 3
1991 3 3
