HC Deb 16 December 1992 vol 216 cc257-8W
Mr. McGrady

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps he will take to ensure that there is a reduction of deforestation in third world countries; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

To help forestry in developing countries we have over 200 projects either under way or in preparation at a total cost to the aid programme of about £160 million. We are also working to improve the effectiveness of the International Tropical Timber Organisation and the tropical forestry action programme in promoting the sustainable use of tropical forests, and to ensure that the statement of principles on the sustainable management of the world's forests agreed at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio last June is followed up with effective action and an international review process.
