Letter from M.E. G. Fogden to Dr. Lynne Jones, dated 4 December 1992]:
As the Employment Service is an Executive Agency, the Secretary of State has asked me to write to you direct to respond to your Parliamentary Question to her about the number of new job vacancies notified to Jobcentres in Birmingham in each month of 1991 and 1992 and the proportion of jobs offering day rate renumeration of £3 per hour or less for the last month for which these figures are available. This is something which falls within the responsibilities delegated to me as Chief Executive of the Agency.
I am unable to let you have details of the number of vacancies offering wage rates of £3 per hour or less since Jobcentres do not retain information on rates of pay. The attached table shows the number of vacancies notified to Jobcentres in the Birmingham area in the specified period.
As decided by the Administrative Committee of the House of Commons, Chief Executive replies to written 417W Parliamentary Questions will now be published in the Official Report. I will also place a copy of this letter in the Library of the House.
