HC Deb 04 December 1992 vol 215 c416W
Mr. Galbraith

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many(a) nurses and (b) doctors were employed in the Health and Safety Executive area offices in Scotland in each year since 1978.

Mr. McLoughlin

The number of(a) nurses and (b) doctors employed in Health and Safety Executive area offices in Scotland in each year since 1978 was:

(a) Nurses (b) Doctors
1978 11.0 10.0
1979 11.5 9.0
1980 9.0 8.0
1981 9.0 8.5
1982 7.5 8.0
1983 7.5 7.5
1984 7.5 7.5
1985 6.0 7.5
1986 6.0 7.5
1987 6.0 7.5
1988 6.0 5.5
1989 4.5 6.0
1990 8.0 6.0
1991 7.0 6.0
1992 5.0 6.5

Note:

Figures are for 1 April each year and show full-time equivalent staff.

The reduction in the number of doctors and nurses reflects primarily a policy of HSE not itself directly providing occupational health services. For example, it appoints local doctors to conduct statutory medical examinations that were previously conducted by H SE staff.
