HC Deb 01 December 1992 vol 215 c128W
Mr. Richards

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what estimate has been made of the value of the Welsh economy of the tourist trade attracted to Wales by sport salmon fishing.

Sir Wyn Roberts

In 1988 a survey commissioned by MAFF estimated that visiting anglers to the National Rivers Authority's Welsh region contributed £2.4 million to the Welsh economy.

Mr. Richards

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what was(a) the total salmon catch taken by sport fishermen in Welsh rivers and (b) the total commercial salmon catch taken off the coast of Wales for 1991–92.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

In the National Rivers Authority's Welsh region in 1991 anglers reported catches totalling 4,525 salmon and commercial netsmen catches totalling 3,037 salmon. Figures for 1992 will be compiled at the end of the year.

Mr. Richards

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is the total revenue generated for the Welsh economy by commercial salmon fishing enterprises.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

In 1991 the first sale value of salmon taken by commercial fisheries in the National Rivers Authority's Welsh region was estimated to be £65,000.

Mr. Richards

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many people in Wales are directly or seasonally employed in(a) commercial salmon fishing enterprises and (b) sport salmon fishing.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

In 1991, 436 people either held commercial licences to fish for salmon and sea trout or were endorsed on such licences. It is estimated that about 60 people are employed full or part-time by owners of fisheries which provide salmon and sea trout angling for sport.
