HC Deb 23 May 1991 vol 191 cc642-3W
Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list the common dose limits and radiation protection standards applied to those who work with ionising radiation in (i) the United Kingdom and (ii) each of the other European Community countries.

Mr. Forth

Common dose limits and radiation protection standards for work with ionising radiation apply throughout the European Community and are set out in European Community directive 80/836/Euratom (as amended by 84/467/Euratom). The United Kingdom legislation that implements the European Community directive is the ionising Radiations Regulations 1985 and the mirror Northern Ireland provisions, copies of which are held in the Library.

A comprehensive picture of how member states have met their obligations under the directive is not readily available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
