To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many workers in the northern region and in each county within the region are covered by the various wages councils; how many have had their individual pay or conditions checked by the councils; and in how many cases underpayments were discovered.

There are no statistics of the total numbers of workers covered by wages councils in the northern region or in counties. The following table gives information about workers in each wages council industry in the northern division of the wages inspectorate whose pay was checked in 1990 and the numbers found to have been underpaid.
