HC Deb 22 March 1991 vol 188 c263W
Mr. Salmond

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give details of the cost to the Exchequer of special London pay points and of local pay additions in London, the south-east and south-west of England, for civil servants in each of the last five years; if he will break these costs down by Department; and if he will list the number of civil servants, by Department, who are in receipt of these additional payments.

Mrs. Gillian Shephard

A breakdown of the information by Department could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. London spine points were first introduced in October 1988 for some groups of staff and by January 1990 had been extended to about 100,000 staff within the London weighting area—a radius of 18 miles from Charing Cross. The annual estimated cost is now £66 million. Local pay additions were first introduced in June 1988 and are now paid to about 63,000 staff with an annual estimated cost of £32.2 million, broken down as follows:

£ million
London 21.3
Rest of the South East 8.9
South West 0.3
Rest of the United Kingdom 1.7
32.2
