HL Deb 19 March 1991 vol 527 c19WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will give military and other assistance to Kurds in the north of Iraq, and Shi'ites in the south, who are fighting to liberate themselves from the rule of Saddam Hussein.

The Earl of Caithness:

It is not for us but for the people of Iraq to choose the government of their country. While we would not regret the disappearance of Saddam Hussein's regime, we have no interest in a breakdown of authority in Baghdad or in the disintegration of Iraq.
