HC Deb 19 June 1991 vol 193 c198W
Mr. Pawsey

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what estimate he has made of the additional public funding Church schools would receive if they were all grant maintained, over and above what they are currently receiving.

Mr. Eggar

It is not possible to give a specific figure. Church schools which become grant maintained are eligible to receive a one-off transitional grant, various special purpose grants and a formula capital allocation. Some of these replace benefits or services which LEA-maintained schools are eligible to receive in another way. Such schools are also to be eligible to bid for 100 per cent. funding of named capital building projects. The amount received will depend on whether the bid is successful.

Mr. Pawsey

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many church schools have applied for grant-maintained status; and how many have received it.

Mr. Eggar

To date, 14 Church schools have applied for grant-maintained status. Of these, we have approved eight, rejected one and have yet to decide the remaining five.
