HC Deb 18 June 1991 vol 193 c86W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will reconsider the design of prohibiting traffic signs, to ensure a consistent pattern to avoid confusion between those carrying a diagonal red bar and those without a bar, particularly for those affecting cyclists.

Mr. Chope

There are no plans to change the design of prohibitory traffic signs. The red circle around a sign barring particular categories of road user indicates the prohibition. Red bars are used only on signs banning left, right or U-turns. This is consistent both internally in the United Kingdom and with the European convention on road signs and signals.
