HC Deb 18 June 1991 vol 193 cc85-6W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what new proposals he has to promote the introduction of bus priority schemes; and if he will make a statement;

(2) what is his most recent assessment of the value of bus priority schemes.

Mr. Freeman

Bus priority schemes have an important role to play in keeping buses moving in congested areas. It is for local authorities to introduce such measures. I have recently set up a working group, including representatives from the industry, local authorities and the police to consider ways to promote bus use. A sub-group is considering new guidance for local authorities to assist them in adopting appropriate schemes. We hope to be able to provide support for some bus priority measures in 1992–93 if suitable proposals are put forward by local authorities.
