The infant mortality rate in England has continued to fall since 1984. In 1990 it reached its lowest level at 7.9 per 1,000 live births.

The table lists the countries out of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's membership of 23 which, according to international sources of information, had lower infant mortality rates than England in (a) 1974, (b) 1979 and (c)
