§ Mr. DorrellIn the year ending March 1989, the latest year for which information is available centrally, an estimated 3.27 million operations were performed in NHS hospitals in England, of which an estimated 48,000 were on private patients. These numbers are provisional estimates based on incomplete data and may be subject to revision. Figures from the Independent Health Care Association indicate that there were some 510,000 operations carried out by the private sector in 1988.
