§ Mr. Ron DaviesTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list those sites so far designated or identified for designation in Wales as special protection areas under EC directive 79/409 on the conservation of wild birds or wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar convention on wetlands of international importance, especially on waterfowl habitat.
§ Mr. David HuntThe designation of SPA and Ramsar sites is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment. Welsh sites are designated in consultation with me.
In Wales three SPAs, Skomer (part), Dee estuary and Grassholm, and two Ramsar sites, Dee estuary and Cors Fochno, have been designated.
A further 20 areas have been identified for possible designation as SPAs and Ramsar sites. Four of these areas have been identified as being suitable for designation as both SPAs and Ramsar sites. The details are as follows:
