HL Deb 20 February 1991 vol 526 cc29-30WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they consider that the recent remarks from within the United States administration about King Hussein of Jordan, and the holding back of 20 million dollars of United States aid that was due to Jordan in 1990 and 57.2 million dollars promised in 1991, were appropriate, and whether they will ensure that moneys due to Jordan from the Gulf Crisis Financial Co-ordination Group are not affected by the opinions expressed, and presumably held, by the United States administration.

The Earl of Caithness

We regret King Hussein's statement of 6th February about the Gulf and understand the American response to it. But the collapse of Jordan's economy would serve nobody's interests: we shall continue our efforts to encourage the international community to provide support.
