HL Deb 20 February 1991 vol 526 c30WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Which of the coalition members have made it clear they will not take part in an invasion of Iraq, as opposed to Kuwait.

The Earl of Caithness

The coalition's objectives are based on the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and are limited to the removal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait, the restoration of the legitimate Kuwaiti Government and the restoration of peace and security in the area. Allied operations take place in that context.

Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they endorse for the United Kingdom the statement made by the United States Secretary of State on 29th January, to the effect that "the US … is not interested in expanding the conflict", and how this statement is to be reconciled with the attacks launched from Turkey by United States aircraft, and with the reported attacks on road transport in Jordan.

The Earl of Caithness

Operations by allied forces, from wherever they are launched, have been directed at targets which support Iraq's extensive military machine, and sustain its illegal occupation of Kuwait. We share with the US and other coalition partners the objectives set out in the relevant Security Council resolutions. There have been no attacks on road transport in Jordan.
