Mr. Bowis

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will list the types of operation and forms of treatment that are currently available on the National Health Service but were not so available before 1979.

As a result of medical advances, the skill and flexibility of national health service staff and the Government's continued commitment and support, a wide range of new operations and treatments have become available through the National Health Service since 1979. Some examples of these are:

  • Minimally invasive therapy
  • Some forms of laser treatment
  • Cochlear implants
  • Intravenous thrombolytic therapy
  • Lithotripsy
  • Heart, heart/lung, lung, liver transplants
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery
  • Drug treatment of peptic ulcer
  • Drug treatment for anaemia in renal patients
  • Progress in paediatric heart surgery
  • Progress in treatment of certain children's cancers
  • Progress in treatment of vulnerable or sick new born and older children
