HL Deb 17 December 1991 vol 533 cc48-9WA
Lord Rea

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have made contact with the UN Secretary-General regarding (a) his current efforts to send a UN team to East Timor to investigate the 12th November massacre, and (b) moves to hold a Security Council meeting before Christmas to discuss the situation in East Timor.

The Earl of Caithness

The Government of the Netherlands, as EC Presidency, is in touch with the United1 Nations Secretary-General on behalf of the member states about the situation in East Timor. We are not aware of any proposal for a meeting before Christmas of the United Nations Security Council to discuss this matter.

Lord Rea

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether or not they regard as independent the team of senior government officials who are members of the inquiry team established by the Indonesian Government to investigate the massacre of civilians in East Timor: and to give the reasons for their opinion.

The Earl of Caithness

The commission of inquiry established by the President of Indonesia on 18th November, composed of senior and experienced figures, is empowered to conduct an independent and thorough investigation. The conclusions of the commission will reveal its objectivity and independence.
