I meet the chairman of British Coal regularly to discuss all aspects of the coal industry.

Mr. Wakeham

Rothschild, along with the Government's other advisers on coal privatisation, are analysing options for the sale of the industry. No decision on the form or timing of privatisation will be taken until after the general election.

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy how many pits were working in January 1984; and how many are still in operation.

At the beginning of the financial year 1984–85 British Coal had 170 producing collieries. There are currently 54 collieries in operation.

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy when he next intends to meet representatives of the Scottish TUC to discuss the future of the coal industry.

I have no immediate plans to meet representatives of the Scottish Trades Union Congress to discuss the future of the coal industry.
