HL Deb 29 October 1990 vol 522 c1764WA
Lord Mayhew

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What contacts they have had with the governments of Canada and Australia regarding the punishment of war criminals; and how many suspects have been charged in those countries since 1987, and with what results.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Earl Ferrers)

The Government have communicated with the governments of Canada and Australia about bringing war criminals to justice, and continue to maintain close contact on the matter. Our information is that, since 1987, one suspect has been charged in Australia and the case is currently pending. The Canadian authorities have charged three persons; one of these has resulted in an acquittal, but the case is proceeding on appeal. The remaining cases are in progress, as are denaturalisation proceedings in respect of a fourth suspect.
