HC Deb 08 May 1990 vol 172 cc91-2W
Dr. David Clark

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list the chemical components of recent contaminated pig feed.

Mr. Gummer

It is not possible to list all the components of the feed concerned. My Department has, of course, investigated those components which might be implicated in recent pig health problems.

Dr. David Clark

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is his estimate of the number of pigs which had been given feed contaminated with CYNOX 425 which had entered the food chain.

Mr. Gummer

My estimate would be none, on the basis that these pigs were adult sows newly weaned and some adult boars. The sows were between lactations and would only have been slaughtered for welfare reasons. The feedingstuffs company has confirmed that animals slaughtered for welfare purposes have not entered the food chain.
