To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how much of the recently announced £5.7 billion expenditure on roads has been earmarked for road safety measures; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Atkins

Safety is a central objective and integral part of the trunk road programme. It is not an optional extra whose costs can be separately identified. Details of the contribution of the programme to road safety are contained in section 6 of the report "Trunk Roads, England—Into the 1990s".
