HL Deb 27 June 1990 vol 520 cc1718-9WA
Lord Brougham and Vaux

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What advice they have received from the Tyrrell Committee on the question of the removal of bovine brains.

The Minister of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Baroness Trumpington)

As indicated during the debate in the other place on Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy on 21st May, my right honourable friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food asked the Advisory Committee on Spongiform Encephalopathies to consider slaughterhouse practices. He received verbal advice from the committee on 13th June that the recovery of head meat from bovine skulls should not be undertaken after the removal of the brain. He has accepted this advice and has issued appropriate guidance to local authorities. My right honourable friend will of course take account of any further advice that the committee offers in formulating future action on slaughterhouse procedures.
