It is restricted to those with first degrees and excludes those with higher degrees. 2 Based on the OPCS general household survey (1987) and updated to 1990 using the annual growth in the average earnings index. This source yields data for age bands rather than age points. For 1990, a growth of 9.5 per cent. has been assumed. Note: Information about the average pay of polytechnic lecturers at age points is not available in the form requested. Polytechnic lecturers are paid on a 14-point scale from £9,117 to £16,521; senior lecturers on a 9-point scale from £15,954 to £20,511; Principal lecturers/readers on 9-point scale from £19,941 to £24,501. The pay of heads of Department ranges from £24,000 to £28,263 according to grade. But pay scales are not strictly comparable with data for gross earnings.
