HC Deb 25 July 1990 vol 177 c287W
Mr. Andrew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what advice on financial maintenance his Department gives to students applying for courses leading to qualifications registered under the Professions Supplementary to Medicine Act 1960.

Mr. Alan Howarth

Students on designated courses leading to certain of these qualifications may be eligible for an award under the Education (Mandatory Awards) Regulations in force at the time of their application, provided that they are not in receipt of a bursary or award made under the Health Services and Public Health Act 1968. My Department publishes annually a brief guide entitled "Grants to Students" which gives general information on eligibility for and calculation of grants under the regulations.

Students on certain courses may also be eligible for a loan under the Education (Student Loans) Regulations 1990 recently approved by Parliament. My Department has issued a leaflet entitled "The Student Top-up Loan Scheme" which gives advice to students on eligibility for loans and their terms and we will shortly publish more detailed guidance in a booklet "Loans to Students".
