HC Deb 25 July 1990 vol 177 c335W
Mr. Bowis

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what action is being taken to make the national health service more environmentally friendly.

Mr. Dorrell

We recently launched two campaigns—"Brighter and Better Hospitals", concerned with generally improving hospitals' internal and external environments, and "Towards a Greener NHS", concerned with energy conservation, the use of lead-free petrol in NHS vehicles and reducing air pollution from waste incinerators.

Health authorities are also encouraged, and are taking active steps, to reduce their use of CFCs and to examine possibilities both of collecting waste for recycling and the use of recycled materials.

Details of the campaigns are given in Health Service Estate journal No. 70 (June 1990), copies of which have been placed in the Library.
