HL Deb 19 July 1990 vol 521 c1107WA
Lord ClintonDavis

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they propose at Report stage of the Environmental Protection Bill to introduce a scheme to monitor the overall effect of lowlevel radioactive waste.

Lord Hesketh

The Government already set strict safety standards for the storage and disposal of radioactive waste in authorisations issued under the Radioactive Substances Act 1960. Where appropriate, monitoring is included as a condition of the authorisation. Further details of the monitoring programmes carried out by the Government and nuclear operators are set out in the bookletMonitoring of Radioactivity in the United Kingdom Environment published by HMSO, a copy of which is in the Library. Such an amendment is therefore unnecessary.
