HL Deb 10 July 1990 vol 521 c253WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, they have noted the China campaign of Amnesty International calling for the release or prompt and fair trial of the 650 prisoners whose names they have sent to the Chinese Prime Minister and requesting information about thousands more allegedly arrested, whether they believe that reports of torture are well founded; and if so, what action they are taking.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

The Chinese authorities have admitted that torture still takes place in China, but state that they are adopting measures to end the practice. We remain concerned about general abuses of human rights in China, and have called on the Chinese, in keeping with their international obligations, to guarantee full respect for the human rights of their citizens.
