HL Deb 10 July 1990 vol 521 c253WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether Turkey has yet revoked the Administrative Decree of 9th April 1990 (KHK/413) concerning censorship, press restrictions, deportation, detention for interrogation and related matters, in Eastern Turkey; and what information they have about the need for such a measure.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

: The administrative decree remains in place. While it curtails several basic freedoms, which we should like to see restored as soon as possible, its introduction must be seen against a rising tide of the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) terrorist activity in South East Turkey, which has been responsible for over 300 deaths so far this year.
