HL Deb 15 January 1990 vol 514 cc513-4WA
Lord Macaulay of Bragar

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is their policy not to release foreign nationals from prison, who would normally be eligible for parole, on the grounds that if such persons are deported following release they cannot be subject to the supervision of the courts; and, if so, whether they have any proposals to remedy this situation to save public funds spent on keeping these persons in prison.

Earl Ferrers

An inmate who is the subject of a court recommendation for deportation, or who is otherwise liable for deportation or removal under Immigration Service powers, has the same parole eligibility as any other inmate and is considered for selection for parole against the same criteria. It is not the Government's policy to deny parole to those liable to deportation on the grounds that such persons could not be supervised in the Untied Kingdom.
