HC Deb 05 April 1990 vol 170 cc778-9W
Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what consents the Shell site at Stanlow currently possesses for discharges into(a) the Mersey and (b) the Gowy; when they were last reviewed; and when they are next planned to be reviewed.

Mr. Heathcoat-Amory

I understand from the National Rivers Authority (NRA) that consented discharges of trade, sewage and surface water effluent from the Shell site at Stanlow are to either the Manchester ship canal, or the River Gowy and its tributaries. Details of these consents are held on the public register maintained by the NRA and available for inspection at the North West regional office, New Town house, Buttermarket street, Warrington.

The consents for these discharges have been reviewed on an individual basis, as appropriate, the most recent reviews being in July 1988.

The NRA is currently engaged in discussions with Shell with a view to improving the site drainage arrangements at Stanlow, and as a consequence is further reviewing all the discharge consents for the site.
