HL Deb 14 March 1989 vol 505 cc225-6WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the resolution of the International Maritime Organizatino of 1987, supported by both the United States and United Kingdom has led to fewer collisions between submerged submarines and surface vessels, especially fishing-boats, in the Irish Sea and adjoining waters; and how many such incidents there have been since the date of the resolution.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

The Department of Transport is sure that highlighting awareness of this issue amongst IMO member states has assisted in the avoidance of such incidents, of which four have been reported in the Irish Sea and adjoining waters since the resolution was adopted on 19th November 1987.
