HL Deb 27 July 1989 vol 510 cc1669-70WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why only one quarter of the circumference of the newly confirmed neolithic palisaded circle at West Kennet Farm on the Avebury World Heritage Site has been scheduled as an Ancient Monument (WI 10390) and not the whole of it.

Lord Hesketh

The decision to schedule a section of the Neolithic/Bronze Age palisaded circle was taken in the light of a very precise archaeological evaluation of the monument which enabled conclusions to be drawn about the exact nature, the location and the importance of this part of the circle.

Further evaluation work is proposed to determine the position and nature of the rest of the circle, or circles, to the east of the scheduled area and to the south, on the other side of the river. The need for further scheduling will be considered in the light of the outcome of the survey.
