HC Deb 24 October 1988 vol 139 c10W
Mr. Sean Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what are the latest available figures for the Metropolitan police in the London pay area of the number of vacancies by grade and the proportion this is of the grade complement in London.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

I understand from the Commissioner that on 30 September there were a total of 479 vacancies within the working civil staff ceiling of the Metropolitan police. This represents a shortfall of 3.7 per cent.

The Metropolitan police is introducing a system of grade complements within the civil staff ceiling. Until this has been completed, it is not possible to provide reliable figures on vacancies by grade.

Metropolitan police staff are based in the London area.
