HC Deb 24 October 1988 vol 139 c44W
95. Mr. David Davis

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assistance he is currently giving to Afghan refugees; and how he proposes to aid their rehabilitation in Afghanistan.

Mr. Chris Patten

I have now fully committed the £10 million which was pledged for Afghan refugees earlier this year. These funds have been channelled through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Committee for the Red Cross, UNICEF and British voluntary agencies, including Afghan Aid.

We are continuing to keep in close contact with the United Nations special co-ordinator for Afghanistan, as he draws up his plans for the relief and resettlement of the refugees. In view of the importance of agricultural rehabilitation in this process, I have recently agreed to provide £150,000 to assist the work of the agricultural survey of Afghanistan.
