HC Deb 19 October 1988 vol 138 c913W
Mr. Frank Field

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will set out in theOfficial Report the number of infant deaths attributed to sudden infant death syndrome in England each month in 1986.

Mrs. Currie

The table shows the number of deaths (registered in England and Wales, but usually resident in England) under one year of age with any mention of sudden infant death syndrome, cot death or similar term on the death certificate, irrespective of whether it did or did not appear as the underlying cause of death by month of occurrence for 1986. Infant deaths which may have been sudden and unexpected, but where no mention of "sudden" or "cot" death or similar term was made on the death certificate, cannot be separately identified reliably.
